(Four) species of locust/grasshopper are mentioned in the Chumash as being
kosher. So why are we not gaily nibbling on chocolate covered grasshoppers
while reading this? Because we are no longer baki (totally confident and
familiar) with the simanim (features) that identify the kosher species.
Temanim, however, have a continuous tradition in this area and will eat
kosher grasshoppers.
