The basic answer to the question of where Hebrew came from is "we just
don't know." What we do know [from secular sources] is that there was a
type of proto-semitic language common to all the lands of that area. So for
example the language of the Moabite Stone found in Jordan in the last
century and at present in the Louvre (a facsimile is in the British Museum)
is written in a language very akin to the Hebrew of the Tanakh including
vav consecutive.
