According to Eliezer Abrahamson, the wearing of black is just as a means of
identification. I think it is more than that. If one takes a peek into the
Kitzur Shulchan Oruch Siman 3, he will notice a paranthetical comment from
Rabbi Shlomo Ganzfried that "the color black symbolizes humility, lowliness
and modesty". That most likely is the reason that Kapotes and Sirtuks are
generally black.
