We are in complete agreement. The mitzvah of emunah (belief) is a complex
and nuanced one. It leaves much room for improvement, well after a person
decides that he/she fully believes.
What I don't believe (no pun intended!), although I am open to being
corrected, is that the mitzvah addresses itself exclusively to what we
would call the believer. Surely the mitzvah's main thrust is to command
belief, including at the most elementary level. Once this belief is in
place, there is lots of room to grow, as suggested by the Brisker Rov z"l.
I still think that any absolute "proof" would run afoul of the basic intent
of this mitzvah.
