My Rebbe would daven in yeshiva on a regular basis where the davening was,
obviously, not rushed. One morning he davened in a local shul. They davened
"quickly" so he approached one of the regulars and asked why so fast? The
reply
he received was that they have to go to work. He accepted that as being a
"valid" response. Shortly after that he davened in the same shul on a Sunday
morning. Again, they davened "quickly" and again he approached one of the
regulars and asked why so fast? The reply he received was that that is the
way
they always daven.
The point is obvious, and the relevance to this discussion is also obvious.
If
one has to daven quickly to get to work that is "acceptable" but when that
becomes the routine then something is missing.
A few years ago I davened in a shul on a Sunday morning and the davening
wasn't
rushed. The Shatz (cantor) was approacehd by someone who commented that he
had
taken a long time. He replied that it was Sunday and there was no excuse to
rush. This man (in his 60s) understands the point.
