In regard to the lost ark.

Since the Medrash states that the Aron Hakodesh (Ark) was buried beneath
the Bais Hamikdosh (Temple), I wonder why it was not discovered by the
Jewish people during the second Bais Hamikdosh and put back into the
Kodesh Hakodoshim (holy of holies) in the second Bais Hamikdosh. The
second Temple stood for 420 years. Wouldn't the Jews of that period been
interested in searching for it. Furthermore, King Herod rebuilt the
second temple from the deep foundations up. At certain points he hit
rock bottom as the bedrock. Why was it not found?
