I thought the question was in regard to MAASAR [the obligation to give 10%
of one's income to charity], and in this respect I wondered why is it any
different than making a pledge after an Aliya? After all, what benefits
does one receive from membership to disallow use of Maasar money? But,
there are some shuls that will not let a non-member daven for the ammud
[lead the prayers] or receive an aliya. In these cases part of the dues
would not be Maasar (or even a IRS deduction). Otherwise, there would seem
to me to be no difference between dues and a pledge after an aliya.
