I am a new subscriber and as such have not seen the entire discussion of
magic (#78 was my first issue), but it may be appropriate to mention the
following:

Rabbi Herschel Schachter writes in his book "Nefesh Harav" (p. 233) that
Rabbi J.B. Soloveitchik's students once approached him about hypnotism. He
said that it was not allowed because it was considered "shtus"
(foolishness). This point gives an additional angle to the ruling that
magic is in fact prohibited.
