The Matriarchs: Rachel

I am trying to study the Matriarchs. I have several questions about Rachel.

1) Why did Rachel steal her fathers idols when she left?
2) Why is Rachel considered the personification of loving mother (according
to Rabbi Joseph Telushkin in JEWISH LITERACRY)
