Atonement for sin

Since the destruction of the last Temple and the effective end of the
sacrificial system for the forgiving of sin, how do we gain that forgiveness?
As surely the values established in Torah are the same now as they where
then and a sacrifice was always required for a sin offering.

I do not profess to be a scholar of Torah and this is just an observation
that I am struggling with. In the past I was told that good works assured
forgiveness and righteousness (no source, just word of mouth) however, this
has become a thorn in my side for quite sometime as I cannot (due to my
lack of knowledge) console this problem.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Many Thanks,
