Yashar koach in keeping mitzvoth, and may you merit to fulfill many
mitzvoth in the coming year.

I would like to say that although some mitzvoth are derabonan (instituted
by the sages), and the purpose for which they instituted these is often
(but not for the most part) a "fence" to prevent violation of a mitzva
d'oraitha (established in Torah); there is a mitzva d'oraitha "..Lo tasur
min hadavar asher yaggidu l'kha, yamin us'mol." (Devarim [Deuteronomy]
17:11), " Don't deviate from the thing they will tell you either to the
right or to the left."

This means that mitzvoth derabonan do not have a "lower status" than
mitzvoth d'oraitha. I hope this will make you feel better when you
understand that although (some of) these mitzvoth are called syagim -
"fences", this is only the reason why they were established, not the reason
why we follow them. You are not "losing sight of Torah for all the
fences", but actually coming closer to Torah when you keep them.

I hope what I have written will help you to feel more joy in the mitzvoth
that you keep.
