Concerning Mishle (Proverbs) 30:4. The verse refers, traditionally, to the
mechanics of the creation of the world. The verse starts with the
question, 'who has ascended the heavens and then descended' (presumably
with knowledge of heavenly matters). It ends with the question, 'what is
his name (the name of he whose wisdom encompasses the heavens), and what is
the name of his son' (i.e. his descendant who inherited that wisdom). The
sense of the verse is to discourage speculation about Divine acts. The
next verse continues, 'Every word of G-D is refined, He is a shield for
those who rely on Him. Do not add to His words lest He rebuke you, and you
will be shown to be a liar'. These passages illustrate a point made by our
sages that the very passages that unbelievers raise to refute our beliefs,
can, conversely, be used to refute them. Note that the first verse does
not say, 'who descended from heaven and then went back up', but who
ascended and then went back down. It clearly is not referring to any
angelic or "divine" being.
