Why was Ezekiel told to lie on his left side and then on his right side?

The Talmud (Sanhedrin 39a) says that G-d made Ezekiel suffer (by telling him to lie on one side, then on the other side, and so on: Ezek. 4:4,6) because he was a leader of the Jewish people, and his suffering was an atonement for their sins.
