The Basics of Judaism: Messiah and the Next World (including Reward & Punishment): The Messiah in the Torah:

Where is the Messiah mentioned in the Torah?

Well, nowhere explicitlyAccording to some commentators, there are two verses in the Torah which allude to the Messiah (they are the only places where the word "Messiah" occurs in the official Aramaic translation of the 5 Books of Moses (Targum Unkelos): 1) Jacob's blessing to his son Judah (Gen. 49:10) is translated (by the Targum) as "The monarchy shall not depart from Judah ... until the Messiah comes". 2) Balaam (Num. 24:17) prophesied that "A star will emerge from Jacob and a scepter will arise from Israel"; the Targum translates this as "A king will arise from Jacob and a Messiah will grow out of Israel". The primary Biblical source for the Messiah is Isaiah Ch.11. There are many other passages about the Messiah in the Prophets; two more examples are Zechariah 6:12 and Malachi 3:1.
