The Jewish Calendar and Holidays (incl. Sabbath):  Other Holidays and Fasts: Chanukah:

What is Chanukah?

Chanukah is a Jewish holiday that commemorates the successful revolt of the Jews against the Syrians around 150 BCE, and their establishment of a Jewish kingdom in Palestine. The word means "dedication", referring to the purification and rededication of the Second Temple after the victory. The holiday lasts eight days beginning on the 25th of Kislev, which varies between the end of November and the end of December. The primary Talmudic source about Chanukah is Shabbos 21b.
