Why did Jacob prophesy a great future for Judah, but not for hisfirst three sons, including Levi who was the ancestor of Moses andAaron?
Jacob was angry at Reuven because of the Bilhah affair (Gen.35:27),
and at Shimon and Levi because of their attack on Shechem (34:30),
so he didn't prophesy anything good about any of them - even about
Levi. Apparently the tribe of Levi achieved their high status because
of their good behavior in Egypt after Jacob died; they provided spiritual leadership to the Israelites in Egypt during the generations of Kehos and Amram.
