Why were Moses and Aaron punished when Moses hit the rock to get water
for the people (Num. 20:8-12)?
Moses and Aaron were punished because Moses hit the rock rather than
speaking to it, and Aaron didn't stop him. Also, they addressed the
people in disparaging terms ("Hear now, ye rebels"); this was unwarranted, because the people were only asking for water, not rebelling.
