The Bible gives very few details about David's childhood. In 1 Samuel we are told that he had seven older brothers and was a shepherd (17:12-15) who killed predators that attacked his sheep (17:34-37). As a shepherd he may have begun to compose psalms, but he is mentioned as playing music only after he became a general for Saul (1 Samuel 19:9).
