He was a prophet who lived in Shiloh in the time of Shelomoh and Yerovam. He was an instigator of Yerovam's revolt against Shelomoh (1 Kings 11:29-40), and even endorsed Yerovam's establishment of idol worship (see Sanhedrin 102a). In his old age, he prophesied that Yerovam's son would die and that his dynasty would not last (1 Kings 14:1-18), but the wording of his curse implied that the people would recover from the disaster (see Taanis 20a).
