From Idolatry to Conversion: Judaism and Non-Jews: Idolatry and Non-Jewish Practices: Idolatry:

What is idolatry?

An idolator is someone who believes that some person or thing, other than G-d Himself, is divine or is an intermediary between G-d and us. Thinking very highly of oneself, or being arrogant, resembles idolatry in some respects, but it isn't technically idolatry. Lovers and fans adore others, but they're not worshipping them, so they aren't idolators either. Expressions of respect and affection aren't idolatry if no worship is intended.
