The Basics of Judaism: Basic Values and Morality: Dreams:

What is the significance of dreams?

The Rabbinic view is that the overwhelming majority of dreams have no significance; as the Talmud says "A person is shown only what is on his mind" (Berachos 55b). In rare cases a dream may contain prophetic elements (ibid. 57b: "A dream is a 60th part of prophecy"), but the general rule is that "Dreams neither raise nor lower" (Gittin 52a), and they can be ignored. For a summary of the Rabbinic sources on dreams see the article "Divrei Chalomos" in the Talmudic Encyclopedia.
