Prayer and Religious Articles: Prayer and Blessings: Pointing at the Torah:

Why do people point at the Torah with their little finger?

The poskim don't seem to mention which finger is used to point at the Torah. (Another thing done with the little finger - but of the left hand - is taking drops of wine out of the cup at the seder; in that case there are three views as to which finger is used.) Here's a possible explanation for pointing at the Torah with the little finger: The Hebrew word for that finger is ZERES, which has a numerical value of 607. When we point with that finger we're folding back the other four fingers, and if we add 4 to 607 we get 611, which is the numerical value of TORAH.
