Abraham Lincoln was a man of great insight and compassion. As he saw and recognized the suffering of black people, so he understood the plight of the Jewish people. His humanity came from the heart. - S. S. -1/1-/2001 |

I had no idea this had happened. I am very upset that it has never been brought out. When I first started reading this I was sure it was just a story. I am so so sorry that that could happen in America. But then why not. Look what they are doing about God in America today. Thanks for telling this. - M. T. -1/0-/2001 |

Considering abraham lincoln was a closet jew, (he has jewish ancestry, although he was a illegitimate child)I dont find it supprising he would side with the jew money changers. - T. H. -1/0-/2001 |

How ignorant of American history I've been! This is a tragic story that one will have to search long and hard for in American textbooks. As a non-Jewish person, I am ashamed that this happened. This cannot, this must not ever happen again. -0/5-/2001 |

It was horrifying to read of the order expelling the Jews from the South. It was wonderful that Lincoln countermanded the order. I was shocked that this could have happened in America. - R. M. -0/2-/2001 |

This story shows that Abe Lincoln was the graetest president this nation ever had!
Contrast that from F.D.R. - A. C. -0/2-/2001 |

This is one of the sad miscarriages of justice that was averted, many weren't. But G. Washington officially welcomed all Jews to the new country of the US in Providence, RI while he was president. The USA is for all people, but we have rotten apples in the beaurocracy, too bad, we must never letour vigilence down. -0/2-/2001 |

Thank you for your letter. My family has been in
Kentucky for about 5 generations. I have a book
called ADATH LOUISVILLE by Herman Landau. On page
155 the he writes that it was also due to the
then-young B'nai B'rith and a few outspoken rabbis
that prompted President Abraham Lincoln to annul
Grant's decree. It is a very wonderful book that
will enlighten the reader on the history of
the Early American Jews.
Thank you again for your article. I find that
most people think that there were no Jews in
America until the 20th century.
Sincerely, Yudy - J. S. -0/2-/2001 |

Thanks for posting such a wonderful article. It is unbelivable that such a piece of Jewish History has been downplayed so much that one really doesn't know about it. This is the first time I have heard about it, which greatly surprised me!!
Thanks again for such a great article. - C. Z. -0/2-/2001 |

Good to see this story. I had just read about it in "American Jewry and the Civil War" by Bertram W. Korn. I highly recommend this book. It cites many other examples of Lincoln's friendship with and support from Jewish people. Amazon recently got copies of this book in stock. - C. K. -0/2-/2001 |

While it is good to know that Abraham Lincoln did inveigh on behalf of the Jews. The real question is why the Union Army ordered such an expulsion in the first place.
In sharp contrast to their brethren in the South, whose religious and, especially political freedoms were so extensive, and almost totally free of anti-semitism, that they had nearly no parallel in World history, the Jews of the North were highly discriminated against. Could not the political prominence and general wealth of the Jews of the South been a point of contention that led to such an infernal order? Surely no Union General would have been unaware that the Confederate Secretary of War was Judah Benjamin. Early on in a war that was not intially going well for the North, perhaps this order was a way to exact revenge on the Secretary of War. -0/2-/2001 |
